Business insurance and continuity planning: why Australian businesses need both.

Insurance transfers some financial risk. It does not decide which service to restore first, who will contact customers or how the business will operate while a claim is assessed.

Insurance and continuity do different jobs

The right cover may protect assets, earnings, liabilities or technology risks. A continuity plan addresses the operational decisions before, during and after disruption. Together they can reduce uncertainty, but neither replaces the other.

  • Insurance: financial protection subject to the policy terms, limits and exclusions.
  • Continuity: priorities, people, workarounds, communications and recovery actions.
  • Risk management: decisions that reduce the likelihood or impact of disruption.

Make your insurance information usable

Keep policy numbers, insurer and broker contacts, claim instructions, excesses, key definitions and renewal dates with your emergency information. Read the product disclosure statement and obtain professional advice where terms are unclear.

Use continuity analysis at renewal

Your activity and dependency records can improve the conversation with a licensed broker or insurer. They help explain the assets and revenue streams that matter, realistic outage consequences, existing controls and the improvements still in progress.

  • Check whether declared values and interruption periods remain realistic.
  • Review changes to premises, equipment, suppliers and digital systems.
  • Ask what evidence should be retained before and after an incident.

Do not promise an insurance outcome

A plan cannot guarantee cover, a lower premium or acceptance of a claim. Those decisions depend on the policy and insurer. The benefit of preparation is better information, faster internal coordination and a clearer record of decisions when time matters.
